The plant's leaves and fruit are used to make medicine. Senna is a nonprescription laxative approved by the FDA. It is used to treat constipation as well as to clear the bowel prior to diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy. Senna is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, and to help people lose weight.
